About Anna

Canine Anna’s Story begins at an animal shelter in Iowa where she was surrendered as a very young puppy.  Shortly thereafter, Anna was rescued by a canine trainer who recognized Anna to be different from the other puppies at the shelter and thought she would make an excellent Field Trials canine.  This trainer would soon after go on to give Anna to a police canine trainer who eventually sold her to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Canine Anna had an amazing ten year career as a drug detection canine during which she assisted The Drug Enforcement Administration, The Federal Bureau of Investigations, Homeland Security Investigations, The United States Coast Guard Investigative Services and several local agencies.

Canine Anna won or placed at many detection canine competitions over her career.  Anna’s best performance was a second place finish at the 2017 NNDDA Canine Nationals in Paris, Tennessee.

Throughout her career, Anna made many visits to schools to visit with the students and also attended as many National Night Out Against Crime events as she could.  Anna loved taking photos with those she met along thew way and developed quite a social media following.  Anna has appeared as a bomb detection canine on the hit television series NCIS: New Orleans.

Anna Paw Up

During her retirement, Anna lived at home with her family and her two active duty canine “siblings” Balto and Sira.  Anna attended as many Anna 4 Paws events as she possibly could.  Anna took many photos out on the donation trail and brought much needed canine first aid equipment to so many!

Sadly, in September 2022, Anna was lost to incredibly rare Stage 5B Lymphoma of the central nervous system.  Happily, Anna’s name will live on through the work of Anna 4 Paws!

About Anna 4 Paws Foundation

How It Started.....

in 2016, Canine Anna sustained a laceration to her face while conducting a search under a raised house.  I had neither the proper canine first aid equipment nor the proper canine first aid training to help Canine Anna.  It was in this moment that I knew that I, as a handler, had to do better for my partner.  Agencies, while properly budgeting for the costs associated with the purchase of and day to day care for the canine units, don’t always have the available funds to purchase canine first aid kits for the canine teams.  In 2019 Canine Anna was medically retired secondary to a torn ACL.  It was then that I began working on Anna 4 Paws in earnest.   -Adrian Thompson
